FAQ - OBSIDI ACADEMY

  • Should I re-apply to Obsidi Academy?
    • YES: Only if you previously applied and did not pass the psychometric assessments (you had received an email stating you were not being considered for Obsidi Academy).
      • Note: you may re-apply only 1 time after 1 year of receiving email notification from Criteria that you did not meet the assessment criteria (i.e, not pass the assessments).
    • NO: There is no need to re-apply if you have been waitlisted or deferred*.
      • *Deferral Request Limitations
        • Obsidi Academy allows an applicant to defer only 1 time, for example:
          • Applicant receives notification that they are being considered to join the current Cohort, then
            • applicant declines consideration for the current Cohort AND requests a deferral to a future Cohort.
          • A second request to defer to a future Cohort will not be granted as Obsidi Academy has an extensive waitlist. You may reapply 1 year after your deferral request.
    NOTE: If you had been accepted into a previous Cohort and were removed by Obsidi Academy for breach of contract (i.e., your contract was rescinded); you are not eligible to reapply and will not be considered for future Cohorts.
  • Who should take this bootcamp?
    Black-identified individuals currently residing in and legally authorized to work for any employer in Canada who are looking for a professional development opportunity in the field of technology or business.
  • What happened to the Obsidi Academy Full Stack bootcamp?

  • What are the eligibility requirements to join Obsidi Academy?

    The eligibility requirements are:

    • Obsidi membership and a 100% complete Obsidi profile are required. Join for free HERE.
    • Age: 18 years of age and above
    • Black-identified individuals who physically reside in Canada and fulfill the following:
      • Are legally authorized to work for any employer in Canada.
      • Work permits are NOT sponsored by BPTN or partner firms.
      • Prior to Day 1 of Obsidi Academy you physically reside and maintain residence in Canada with a commutable travel time of one hour or 50 km to one of the following TD locations.
        (DISCLAIMER: Location availability is dependent upon seat availability per location, per cohort.):
        1. Province of Ontario: London (275 Dundas St.); Ottawa (1595 Telesat Ct, Gloucester.); Toronto (66 Wellington St. West.
        2. Province of Québec: Montréal (50 Boulevard Cremaize Ouest); or
        3. Province of Alberta: Calgary (421, 7th Ave SW, Floor 34, 35 & 36) (limited job offers for this location)
        4. Note: Proof of residence and verification of commuting time/distance is required during the application process. 
    • Consent to criminal and financial background checks (check yourself here)
    • Consent to psychometric assessments.
    • Not hold employment or attend other educational/ professional development during the bootcamp and subsequent employment.
    • Available to work in a hybrid work environment (upon successful Obsidi Academy graduation and employer onboarding) at least 2 days per week, as per employer workplace policy.

    Disclaimers:
    • Obsidi Academy acceptance/participation is contingent upon Obsidi Academy seat/space availability per Cohort, city location availability per Cohort, and fulfilling ALL Obsidi Academy requirements, including but not limited to passing psychometric assessments and both a criminal and financial background check.
    • Employment offer is contingent upon passing both Obsidi Academy and employer requirements, to include but not limited to passing the employer criminal and financial background check.
    • BPTN and employer (i.e., TD) do not provide sponsorship for Canadian Work Permits.
  • What prerequisites are required?
    There are no educational or career prerequisites. If you want to level up and learn your new skills, we’ll have you crush your goals through Obsidi Academy.
  • Do I need to have existing experience within the tech industry?
    Obsidi Academy requires no previous work experience in the tech industry or existing technical proficiency - besides knowing how to use a computer and access the Internet. You need a desire to learn, work hard, and crush it!
  • Where do I find my Obsidi profile link to include in my Obsidi Academy application?
    In Obsidi, scroll down and find a section called Bring Your Community on the right-hand side.
    • Select the Invite Peeps button and copy your Obsidi profile link.
    • In the Obsidi Academy application, paste your Obsidi profile link into the application request item: “Copy and paste your Obsidi profile link.”
  • What is the duration of the Obsidi Academy bootcamp?
    Total Length of the Obsidi Academy
    The bootcamp length is 12 weeks. Note: Subject to holidays, BFUTR, and bootcamp updates.

    Hours of Operation
    Similar to a full-time job, the bootcamp runs a minimum of 8hrs per day.
    • There are both in-class and out-of-class assignments.
  • What is the learning experience like for Obsidi Academy?
    Obsidi Academy is:
    • A virtual immersive and blended learning (e.g., both instructor-led and self-paced learning) experience.
    • Majority real-time instructor-led training that is remotely delivered.
    • Not recorded and there is no option to view recorded sessions.
  • How many cohorts will run per year?
    Currently, Obsid Academy is scheduled to offer up to three (3) cohorts per year.
    • Obsidi Academy has had an OVERWHELMING response. As such, seat availability is limited and our waitlist is exceeding 1 year.
  • What are the psychometric assessments and why am I required to take them?
    • Psychometric or pre-employment assessments help us find great Obsidi Academy candidates and future tech employees, like you.
    • The scientifically designed assessments help both organizations and candidates find long-term success at work.
    • These assessments reduce biases and provide an equitable application process by ensuring applicants are assessed according to the same objective criteria.

  • What are the steps during the application process and how will I know if I have been accepted into Obsidi Academy?
    • Successful bootcamp applicants will be notified via email at each step of the process.
    • Applicants will go through the following steps (Disclaimer: step order can change as per applicable updates.):
      • Complete the initial application to verify you meet the eligibility requirements. If the eligibility criteria is met, you advance to the next step.
      • Complete the psychometric assessments (estimated time: 30 min). If the assessment criteria is met, you advance to the next step; dependent upon Cohort seat availability and waitlist status.
        • If no seats remain for the current Obsidi Academy Cohort, you will receive an email notification (from Criteria) that you are waitlisted.
        • Waitlisted applicants will receive a status email on the last business day of each month. If your status email states you are being considered for the next Cohort, you advance to the next step; if no, you remain in the waitlist.
      • Complete the criminal and financial background check (via a 3rd party). If the background check is passed, you advance to the next step.
      • Digitally submit any documents requested to validate your Obsidi Academy eligibility requirements. If all documents are valid and verified, you advance to the next step.
      • Review the Obsidi Academy Participant Agreement. Based on your review, you may opt-in or opt out of the application process. If you opt-in, you advance to the next step. 
      • Orientation invites are emailed to applicants based on seat availability for the current cohort. If seat capacity is exceeded, you are placed on the waitlist. If you accept the Obsidi Academy Orientation invite you advance to the next step. If you decline you are placed on the waitlist for the next cohort, pending space availability.
      • Attend the Obsidi Academy Orientation in its entirety.
      • A digital Participant Agreement is emailed to you, directly after the Orientation, for your signature. 
      • Digitally sign the Participant Agreement (a legally binding contract) by the stated deadline, acknowledging your contractual agreement to join the current Obsidi Academy cohort.
      • Obsidi Academy receives your signed contract and countersigns, and you receive email access to the fully executed contract. 
      • You will receive Obsidi Academy onboarding instructions, to prepare you to join Day 1 of the Obsidi academy, via email - latest the Friday, prior to the Monday start date.
    • Obsidi Academy will contact applicants on the waitlist until the current cohort reaches capacity, latest by the end of Week 1 of the current cohort.
    • Deferral Request Limitations
      • Obsidi Academy allows an applicant to defer only 1 time, for example:
        • Applicant receives notification that they are being considered to join the current Cohort, then
          • applicant declines consideration for the current Cohort AND requests a deferral to a future Cohort.
        • A second request to defer to a future Cohort will not be granted as Obsidi Academy has an extensive waitlist. You may reapply 1 year after your deferral request.

  • How much does Obsidi Academy pay their participants?
    There are three (3) months of intensive training involved in Obsidi Academy bootcamp.
    • Obsidi Academy Participants who attend the 3-month bootcamp are paid $2000 CAD/month, for a total of $6000 CAD.
      • Obsidi Academy charges Participants a one-time $500 CAD administration fee.
      • This fee is deducted from the Participant’s first month payment.
    • All payments are subject to applicable Canadian income taxes.
  • Why is it a requirement to not have other employment or be enrolled in other education/professional development programs? Do I need to quit my full-time job while attending the Obsidi Academy?
    An Obsidi Academy participant would not be able to maintain full-time, part-time, or any form of employment/contract during the 3-month cohort. Obsidi Academy requires beyond full-time participation of 40+ hours per week. The Obsidi Academy is YOUR JOB. Further, assignments, projects, team projects, self-study, etc., requires additional time commitment similar to homework.
  • What are the computer hardware requirements for this program?
    Dedicated internet access and a functional computer are required for all participants. Minimum computer specifications:
    • Processor speed: 1.5ghz or higher
    • Memory: 8 GB or higher
    • Storage: 1 GB free space at least
    • Headphones are highly recommended
  • How do I get my Obsidi profile to 100%?
    Completing your profile is easy! There are a few steps you need to take to complete your profile.
    • Upload an image of yourself.
    • Add your:
      • first and last name
      • age and gender
      • location
      • headline
      • company name, experience level, industry, and area of expertise
      • website and main goals
    • Upload your resume.
