Melisa Ellis: Community-Builder & Change-Maker
Melisa Ellis is a remarkable entrepreneur and community builder who has made it her mission to inspire and support the next generation of STEM professionals, particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds. Her commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion is evident in the initiatives she leads, such as the Nobellum Innovator Program at the University of Toronto Chapter. This program, launched in partnership with the University of Toronto Scarborough Campus, aims to support the start-up of at least 100 Black-led businesses in STEM by 2025. Through the program, Melisa and her team provide start-ups with funding, mentorship, and resources to help them grow and scale their businesses.
Melisa’s software engineering and project management expertise has proven invaluable in her work as a change-maker. For example, she has successfully led the technical implementation of a multi-million-dollar robotics facility that produces digital billboard signs for Media Resources Inc. Melisa is a frequent panellist and speaker at events focused on supporting women entrepreneurs and increasing diversity in the tech industry.
Impact of Ellis’ Work on the Black Tech Community
The Nobellum Innovator Program best exemplifies Melisa’s passion for community-building. This program, which Melisa launched in 2022, aims to provide support and funding to Black-led start-ups in STEM.
