Black Tech Week North: Building Black Tech Futures Across Canada

With Black Tech Week North just over the horizon, it’s time to seize the opportunity to be part of something huge.

If you’re a tech company prioritizing diversity initiatives and always searching for highly skilled candidates, this is your chance to join other industry leaders and get involved.

Black Tech Week North celebrates Black innovation, entrepreneurship, and leadership in technology across Canada through a series of localized events.

From in-person tech talks and happy hour mixers to executive roundtables and career meetups, this mutually beneficial event mobilizes the Black tech ecosystem in North America like never before.

Why Black Tech Week North Matters

Black Tech Week North is a national extension of the BFUTR Global Tech Summit, powered by Obsidi® and our partners.

The spirit of Black Tech Week North centers around mobilizing Black tech ecosystems and celebrating innovators.

The BFUTR Summit takes place November 3–5, 2025, and Black Tech Week North is like the pre-game. It was created to:

  • Hype up local ecosystems
  • Allow people a chance to network and connect
  • Get everyone excited and ready for the BFUTR tech conference

More than just a pre-conference warmup, however, the events that take place in each city as part of Black Tech Week North build momentum for the initiative. The networking events and additional opportunities allow attendees of the BFUTR Global Tech Summit to connect with one another prior to the big event.

Companies that form partnerships with Obsidi® get the chance to meet and engage with highly qualified Black women and men in tech who are extremely passionate about what they do. Business owners can expand their recruitment efforts and share more about the impact they’re hoping to have.

Obsidi® members get to participate in an exciting opportunity to:

  • Network
  • Hear highly influential keynote speakers
  • Learn more about who is hiring
  • Discover new startups
  • Geek out on a topic with others who love it too

Below is a more in-depth preview of what our partners and members can expect and how each will benefit from participating in Black Tech Week North.

This is a pivotal moment. Companies that decide to partner with Obsidi® can affect change while simultaneously gaining access to an incredible array of talented and driven Black tech professionals and tech-minded influencers.

They are able to platform their organization like never before and broaden recruitment efforts by accessing a whole new talent pool.

For those who understand the value diversity brings to their business — and know how much it propels innovation — this is a chance you won’t want to miss.

A National Movement Rooted in Local Impact

The proposed cities for Black Tech Week North are:

Toronto, ON

With the largest Black population in Canada, combined with the fact that it’s also a major tech hub, Toronto is an obvious choice. Since 2018, Toronto has added almost 100,000 tech jobs, securing its spot as North America’s fourth-largest tech market.

Montreal, QC

Montreal has a substantial Black community and a strong tech scene. With companies like Facebook AI Research, Microsoft Research, and Google Brain all actively present in Montreal (coupled with its bilingual nature), Montreal is the ideal location for an inclusive tech event.

Ottawa, ON

As the nation’s capital, Ottawa offers strategic importance and a growing tech scene. Ottawa has a significant Black community, and the Kanata area has developed into a major tech hub where you’ll find companies like Mitel, Ericsson, and Nokia.

Calgary, AB

Calgary’s rapid tech growth, as well as its increasing diversity and growing Black population, make it a prime location for BFUTR activations.

Vancouver, BC

Vancouver’s diverse population includes a Black community, and its position as a West Coast tech hub lends itself well to geographical diversity for BFUTR events. As a host to numerous tech companies, Vancouver is also recognized as a significant Canadian tech hub.

Edmonton, AB

With a significant Black population and a growing tech sector that includes initiatives to increase diversity in tech roles, this commitment to diversity and growth aligns perfectly with BFUTR’s objectives.

Brand Activation That Goes Beyond Optics

Black Tech Week North provides our partners with unique branding and hiring opportunities. In addition to being part of a movement, Black Tech Week North lets companies that partner with Obsidi® showcase who they are and meet the rising stars they’re looking to hire.

By expanding visibility and activation efforts through an Obsidi® partnership, companies get to curate the event so it’s designed to attract professionals with the exact skills, experience, and interests they’re looking to engage.

Partners also get to choose the event format; perhaps they want to host a:

  • Hackathon
  • Mixer
  • Fireside chat
  • Workshop
  • Roundtable
  • Tech Talk

Whatever works best, they are free to choose the format that aligns with what they’re hoping to achieve.

In addition to selecting the format, partners get to choose where to host the event and control who attends and how many people they can accommodate. Some prefer smaller, more exclusive, invite-only gatherings, while others enjoy opening them up to anyone interested in the topic.
